Chapter Twelve

I don’t bother going in the house when Nate drops me off that evening. I run right to the backyard and into the darkroom. After an hour of developing, I hang my film, but I’m too tired to wait for them to dry. It’s already late, and my eyelids are heavy, so I decided to go to bed and check them again in the morning.

The next morning, Marge sits at the kitchen table still in her house robe, drinking coffee while thumbing the pages of People.

“You are up early. I just made some coffee if you want some,” Marge says with her eyes glued to an article.

I drop two pieces of bread in the toaster and pour me a cup.

“Marge, I’ve got something that I want you to look at,” I say, blowing on my coffee. I take a small cautious sip as I wait for the toast to brown.

“Sylvester Stallone and that young girl are getting a divorce. Hmph, I knew that wasn’t going to last.” Marge shakes her head with an all-knowing smirk, then licks her finger to turn the page. “Oh, it says here, that ‘Vanna White finds new love’—get it girl!”

I pull the pictures from the pocket of my robe and place them next to her. The toast pops up, and I grab the butter and jam from the refrigerator and butter it. With my back turned from Marge, I say, “You know, Nate took me on a little investigation yesterday. He had the license plate tracked. Remember the license plate in the photo that belonged to Tiffany’s boyfriend? Well, he lives in St. Simons, and we went there yesterday.”

Marge snickers. “‘Sonny and Cher Reaches Stardom but Marriage Hits Rock Bottom.’ Lord, forgive me for laughing, but I saw that one coming too. They are both one can short of a six pack, if you know what I mean.”

I don’t. “Did you even hear what I just said? Look at those pictures please.”

Marge looks up from her magazine. When she notices my serious demeanor, she pushes her glasses on the top of her head to get a better look at me. I grab a chair and sit down beside her. I tap my finger on the photos to draw her attention to them.

“Okay, okay,” she says, examining my suspicious behavior. She puts down her coffee mug, puts her glasses back on, picks up the stack of photos, and starts to shuffle. “I heard you, by the way. But I don’t agree with you investigating anything. I just don’t feel like debating about it, though. Anyway, you developed these pictures on your own. Good job.” She smiles. “They are a little blurry, but we can practice on—”

“Well, it’s a good thing I did investigate it. Now, look really good,” I interrupt, taking the photos from her hand. I shuffle to a picture of Alex and then another one of Mike, then slide them in front of her. “One guy is Alex, that’s the guy last seen with Tiffany, and the other guy is Mike Adams, my bogus date.
